I just got back from a rather unrelated gathering of sub-culture freaks, Anime Expo ( 7/1-4) . Are there any other Anime fans out there in Dead land ?
On the face of it, there are very few similarities between them . Of the 44,000 + attendees , I am probably the only one who knows who the Carter Family was, or have even listened to Dark Star !
When I first went to one of these events , I explained it to one friend that " The anime kids are sort of like the Deadheads, just a little less friendly, and a lot less stoned ". I can recall one time when they held one of these conventions in Anaheim ( right near Disneyland ) we were lined up outside, an these trams of tourist from the Midwest or somewhere were driving by ; and their mouths were agape at the weirdly dressed folk ( I can just see them when they returned home, " oh those Californians are weirder than we though, devil horns , wings, swords , green, and blue hair ...").
I couldn't help but think of the times when the Dead would roll into town, the looks of incomprehension and derision, we would get from the "normal" people . Different sort of freaks, but freaks nonetheless .

I'm kind of a comic book freak (currently reading only The Walking Dead and a couple of Garth Ennis titles, because I just can't afford to read more), and also got into Hong Kong cinema in a big way in the late 80's/90's, even going so far as starting a mail order video business, but I never could get into the anime. Beyond Akira and a handful of others, I just never found any that grabbed me. I understand the appeal, though - it's great to have those kinds of stories that go on, and on, and on.

And I wished I could have liked it more, because as the HK films were becoming less popular and more and more available in the mid-90's, anime was the obvious place for my business to go, but you can't sell those products unless you know and kind of love them, and the interest just wasn't there for me.

My daughter loved My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo. There's a "cameo" of Totoro in the new Toy Story movie, and when I took my girl to see it she noticed it right away and pointed it out. I felt so proud that my six year old was probably the only person in the theater that noticed.

I'm sorry DD , but I do not enjoy / like anime , at all . There is no doubt that Hayao Miyazaki is a master . Spirited Away is a great film . Outside of that , it makes me grind my teeth . I am just a tad too old , before anime began poisio.... I mean , began to infiltr .... Lord sorry , it seems I can't finish that sentence properly .
O.K. , I have 3 boys ( 9 - 13 ) . You wanna know have much anime crap I have bought in the last 10 years ? Yugioh , Bakugan , Ben 10 , Pokemon , Transformers ( the cartoon for kids ) , Naruto , Star Wars : The Clone Wars , and the last one I can remember is Bionicles . That's a lot of money for plastic crap or ... Cards ?! They aren't even Baseball cards ( I tried ) . God knows how much my brood got out of their Grandmother's .
Welcome Back DD ! ;)

Ugh, Pokemon was bad enough, but the Bionicles phase was really, really bad.

Ha ha ha ha ! That' pretty funny ! If I had to experience it that way, especially the kid oriented stuff I would most likely feel like you about this !
I was one of those kids who saw "Astro Boy" , when it came on in late 63 . I got into it in the late 90's , due to influence from the "kids" ( I worked at a Tower Records ) and video games . Also I have always been fascinated with japanese history and culture . It is my only "youth culture" oriented interest, these days, and at 53, I am a pretty unusual fan . I look at it like rock/pop, there are al kinds of stuff, some of it kiddy product, most of it ok, and then some of it pretty good, often despite itself .
My interests are pretty diverse, Classical Music, ancient history, Anime, and The Grateful Dead ... not a lot of common ground ( though I have some "Classical" pals whom like the Dead ).
I see while I was out, we had a 4th of July war ... guess it is good I missed that !

Have you ever found someone who is 4 for 4 , and freaks on GD , Ancient History , Classical Music , and Thing that is called art ? ( Howl's Moving Castle was good too . I liked Spirited Away better , though . )

Yes , the forum seems a tad quiet since Sunday .

No, just me as far as I can tell, and most of my friends would say that is a good thing ...
Seriously, if you like "Spirited Away," there is a good chance you might like his other films , such as "Princess Momonoke", or "My Neighbor Totoro" . Or the the films by the other "Studio Ghibli" directors like Takahata's "Graveyard of the Fireflies" ( seriously sad movie ) . These films are to other anime , what "The Godfather" might be to "Gilligan's Island" ...
"Paprika" by Kon should be the kind of thing a Dead freak might enjoy, pretty trippy .

Just wait til I gear back up for THREE posts per day...well, okay--excitment factor might still be nil, but at least things will scroll off the Big Board a tad faster, eh?

BTW, you continue to impress this old forumite with your even-handed posting skills, which as compliments go, is utterly devoid of substance I suppose, but there you have it.

Is that like The William Tell Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval ?

And your blanking handle almost every time w/ the 11 . I'm currently on a 60's break now b/c of it . I mean it's in my head . For a few seconds after your handle is sung I'm thinking of manatees , snakes and all sorts of animals . It's like a Dr. Doolittle Freak Show in my brain .

And it's blanking beginning to happen with LiA . I have these deep thoughts of scholarly intent when his handle is sung .
